Fat Kid Dance Party

Bevin Branlandingham

Los Angeles-based aerobics instructor and life coach Bevin Branlandingham created a sensation in Los Angeles: she drew crowds weekly to her “Fat Kid Dance Party” exercise classes. These events provided emotional support, welcomed people of all body types, and expressly prohibited body and fat shaming. Bevin’s goal was to bring her message to a larger audience, as well as to raise funding for an exercise video series. Public Impact was hired to spread the word.

We created a strategic communications campaign that focused on the Los Angeles media market. We promoted Bevin as a warrior against fat-shaming and body oppression, the creator of a new fitness paradigm, a survivor of bullying, and a taboo-buster.

In image-conscious Los Angeles, where gym bodies are uniformly slim and muscled, Bevin’s message drew major media attention. Public Impact booked Bevin and “Fat Kid Dance Party” on two major Los Angeles television stations: a top-rated morning show, KTTV-TV’s “Good Day L.A.,” and KABC-TV’s ABC7 Eyewitness News. “Good Day” aired two live segments from reporter Gina Silva with multiple teasers. An additional taped news package aired on KTTV-TV’s Fox 11 New at Noon. The package was also posted on KTTV-TV Fox 11’s website, increasing public exposure. ABC7 Eyewitness News aired a news package produced by Lori Corbin, the station’s Food and Fitness Coach. Her package was posted on ABC7’s website. Public Impact also secured a profile in the city’s top LGBT newspaper, the Los Angeles Blade.
